What the free versions usually give you

ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini and Claude all offer a free tier for chatting, writing help, summaries and answering questions. Free tiers typically have daily or hourly limits and may use less powerful models when busy.

What paid plans usually add

Entry-level paid plans have generally been around the price of a streaming subscription per month. Exact UK prices (including VAT) change – check each provider's pricing page.

Our honest advice

  1. Start free. Use one tool for two weeks.
  2. Only pay if you keep hitting limits or need a specific feature.
  3. Pay monthly first, not yearly, and set a calendar reminder to review.
